Mod loaders
Needed to run mods, not plugins. Each page carries the official installer, every version it reaches and the Java it needs.
Check what you downloaded
Every link above carries Mojang's SHA-1 in its tooltip.
Run sha1sum server.jar and compare it to the checksum on the link. If they match, the file is byte for byte what Mojang published. If you already have a jar and do not know which version it is, the jar identifier answers that from its hash.
Frequently asked
Are these files hosted here?
No, and they never will be. Every link points at piston-data.mojang.com, which is Mojang's own content network and the same file the launcher downloads. Mirroring Minecraft jars is not ours to do, so we point at the original and print the checksum instead.
What is the SHA-1 for?
It is Mojang's own checksum for that exact file. Run sha1sum on what you downloaded and compare: if the two match, the file is byte for byte what Mojang published. It is the only way to be certain a jar from anywhere is genuine.
Which jar do I want, client or server?
The client is the game you play, and the launcher fetches it for you, so you rarely need it by hand. The server jar is the one you run to host a world for other people. Most people arriving here want the server jar.
Why do old versions have no server download?
Mojang did not publish one. The alpha and beta builds from 2009 to 2011 predate the official server jar for most of their run, so the client is all there is and the table says so rather than showing an empty cell.
Do I need a specific Java version?
Yes, and it is listed per version because getting it wrong is the most common reason a server refuses to start. Newer Minecraft needs newer Java, and a version built for Java 21 will not run on Java 17.
