About Minecraft data packs
How do I install a data pack?
Put the data pack file into your world's datapacks folder, then run /reload in game or restart the world. No mod loader is needed.
What is the difference between a mod and a data pack?
A mod changes the game's code and needs a loader installed. A data pack uses the game's own data files to change recipes, loot and world generation, and Minecraft loads it without any extra software.
Do data packs work on servers?
Yes. Drop the data pack into the server's world datapacks folder and run /reload. Players do not install anything on their side.
What is a Minecraft data pack?
A data pack changes recipes, loot tables, advancements, functions and world generation using the game's own data files. Vanilla Minecraft loads them directly, with no loader and no client install.
How do I find data packs that work on my Minecraft version?
Use the Minecraft version filter at the top of the page, and the loader filter beside it. Everything listed under a version declares support for it, so you get the list that will actually load rather than everything that happens to mention the version somewhere in its description.
Where do the downloads come from?
Every data pack links to its author's own release. MCReference is a reference to what exists and where the official download is; nothing here is mirrored, re-hosted or repackaged.
Which loader do data packs need?
Data packs need a loader such as Data pack. Install the loader first, then the data pack, and make sure both are built for the same Minecraft version.
