Shaders for Minecraft 26.3: what works right now
Iris and Sodium already run on Minecraft 26.3, OptiFine does not yet. Which shader packs declare 26.3, how to install them, and what to expect on the 26.4 snapshots.
Minecraft 26.3 Wilderness Bound came out on 15 September 2026, and shaders are already playable on it. Here is where things stand on 27 September.
| Piece | Minecraft 26.3 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Iris | Ready | Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt builds |
| Sodium | Ready | Required by Iris |
| OptiFine | Not yet | Newest release is for 26.2 |
| Distant Horizons | Ready | Works alongside Iris with supported packs |
Which shader packs declare 26.3
123 shader packs in our catalogue list 26.3 in their own release data, against 424 for 26.2. The number grows every week as authors update. These are the most downloaded ones that already do:
- Complementary Shaders: Reimagined and Complementary Shaders: Unbound. The two most used packs on the site. Reimagined keeps the vanilla look, Unbound goes further.
- BSL Shaders. Bright and colourful, in its author's words.
- MakeUp: Ultra Fast. Built to scale down to weak hardware, a good first try on a laptop or older graphics card.
- Sildur's Vibrant shaders. Around since 2012 and known for running on almost anything.
- Bliss Shaders. A fantasy style with lots of settings to tune.
- Mellow. A painterly look that is light on your computer.
- Spooklementary. A dark, moody edit of Complementary, right on time for October.
The full list, sorted by downloads, is on the 26.3 shader pack page. If your favourite pack is not there yet, the version it does declare will very likely still work, as explained below.
Why an older pack usually still works
A shader pack is a set of programs for the shader loader. It does not hook into Minecraft's own code the way a mod does, so a new game version rarely breaks it. What can go wrong is new content: blocks, particles or mobs added in 26.3 may render with missing effects until the pack author adds support. That is cosmetic, not a crash.
The loader is the part that has to match exactly. Iris and Sodium are tied to the Minecraft version, so always download the builds made for 26.3.
Installing shaders on 26.3
- Install the Fabric Loader for 26.3 (or NeoForge, if the rest of your mods use it).
- Download Sodium and Iris for 26.3 and put both jars in your
modsfolder. - Start the game once, so the
shaderpacksfolder gets created. - Put the shader pack zip into
shaderpacks. Do not unzip it. - In game, open Options, Video Settings, Shader Packs, and pick the pack.
If the game crashes at step 3, the two jars are almost always for the wrong Minecraft version or the wrong loader. The full setup guide covers the rest.
Waiting for OptiFine?
OptiFine updates on its own schedule and has usually arrived weeks or months after a release. Iris reads the same shader pack format, and most packs that were written for OptiFine run on it unchanged. Unless you need an OptiFine only feature, there is no reason to wait.
Shaders and the 26.4 snapshots
The first 26.4 snapshot arrived on 22 September and switched the default graphics setting to Vulkan. Iris has not released a build for any 26.4 snapshot yet, so shaders are not possible there for now. If you want shaders, stay on 26.3. Our 26.4 snapshot guide tracks what else is changing.
